Sage & Grapefruit Martini - Armand’s Maison & Marché

Sage & Grapefruit Martini

Some recipes begin with careful planning, while others begin with a walk through the garden.

On a warm summer afternoon, I picked the last two grapefruit from our tree, a lemon and gathered a few fragrant sage leaves from the garden. As the sun began to set and the day's heat slowly faded, the combination seemed destined for a simple, refreshing cocktail.

Bright pink grapefruit brings a lively citrus   sweetness, while fresh sage lends a subtle herbal   aroma that transforms an everyday martini into   something quietly elegant. It's the perfect   companion for a peaceful evening on the patio, a   casual gathering with friends, or a moment to   pause and savor the season.

Made with just a handful of fresh ingredients, this cocktail celebrates the beauty of cooking -and entertaining - with what nature provides.

Pour a glass, step outside, and enjoy the last golden light of the day.

🌿 Sage & Grapefruit Martini

A Perfect Sundown Cocktail

  •  2 oz fresh pink grapefruit juice
  •  ½ oz fresh lemon juice
  •  ½ oz simple syrup
  •  2 fresh sage leaves, lightly bruised
  •  Ice

  •  Thin slice of pink grapefruit
  •  2 fresh sage leaves

Instructions

  1. Chill a martini glass.
  2. Lightly bruise the sage leaves between your fingers to release their aromatic oils.
  3. Add the gin, grapefruit juice, lemon juice, simple syrup, sage leaves, and ice to a cocktail shaker.
  4. Shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds until thoroughly chilled.
  5. Double-strain into the chilled martini glass.
  6. Garnish with a thin slice of pink grapefruit and two fresh sage leaves.

Entertaining Notes

For an extra aromatic touch, gently rub a fresh sage leaf around the rim of the martini glass before pouring the cocktail.

🌿 Armand's Tip: Treat Sage Gently

To bring out sage's beautiful aroma, lightly bruise the leaves between your fingers or gently clap them in your hands before adding them to the cocktail shaker. This releases the essential oils without overpowering the drink.

Avoid finely chopping or heavily muddling the sage, as doing so can extract bitter compounds and leave the cocktail with a harsh, medicinal flavor. A light touch is all that's needed for a fresh, balanced finish.

🍯 Armand's Tip: Keep Simple Syrup on Hand

Simple syrup is one of the easiest cocktail staples to make at home and keeps beautifully in the refrigerator.

Basic Simple Syrup

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water

Combine the sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved. Remove from the heat and allow the syrup to cool completely before transferring it to a clean glass bottle or jar.

Stored in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator, simple syrup will keep for up to one month. Having a batch ready makes it easy to prepare cocktails, lemonade, iced tea, and other refreshing drinks whenever inspiration strikes.
