Summer Red Wine Sangria - Armand’s Maison & Marché

Summer Red Wine Sangria

A pitcher of sangria is one of the easiest ways to welcome guests on a warm summer afternoon. Prepared a few hours ahead, the fruit has time to infuse the wine with fresh citrus and orchard flavors, making it a refreshing companion to charcuterie, cheeses, and warm focaccia.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium apple, cored (skin on) and cut into small pieces

  • 1-2 medium oranges, sliced with the rind on (remove any large seeds), plus additional orange slices for garnish

  • 2-3 tablespoons honey, or sugar

  • 1  cup fresh orange juice

  • ⅓ cup Brandy or Cointreau

  • 1 (750 ml) bottle dry Spanish red wine

  • 1 cup ice, plus more for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large pitcher, combine the apple, orange, and honey or sugar. Gently muddle with a wooden spoon or muddler for about 45 seconds, allowing the fruit to release its juices.

  2. Add the orange juice and liqueur, then muddle for another 30 seconds to combine.

  3. Pour in the red wine and stir well. Taste and adjust with additional orange juice, brandy, or a touch more brown sugar, if desired.

  4. Refrigerate for 2 to 4 hours to allow the flavors to meld. Just before serving, stir in the ice to chill.

  5. Pour into wine glasses over fresh ice and garnish with orange slices, if desired.

Serving Suggestion

Serve alongside a generous appetizer table with cured meats, cheeses, seasonal fruit, olives, and warm olive focaccia. The bright citrus and rich fruit notes pair beautifully with salty cheeses, charcuterie, and Mediterranean flavors.

Armand's Tip: For the best flavor, prepare the sangria several hours before guests arrive. The fruit continues to infuse the wine as it rests, creating a smoother, more balanced sangria. Enjoy within 48 hours for peak freshness.
