A Derby Day Garden Lunch - Armand’s Maison & Marché

A Derby Day Garden Lunch

Inspired Entertaining with a Whimsical Cheese Hat

There is something wonderfully charming about Derby Day. While the races may be the inspiration, we find ourselves equally captivated by the opportunity to gather friends around a beautifully set table, raise a glass, and celebrate the arrival of spring.

Our interpretation leans less toward tradition and more toward relaxed garden entertaining. Picture a linen-covered table overlooking the coast, fresh flowers gathered into simple glass vases, champagne chilling nearby, and an assortment of elegant bites designed for leisurely conversation.

At the center of it all sits an unexpected conversation piece - a Derby hat made entirely of cheese.

Beautiful enough to admire and delicious enough to enjoy, it's a playful centerpiece that captures the spirit of the occasion while remaining wonderfully simple to assemble.

Setting the Table

A Derby lunch doesn't require elaborate decorations. Instead, let seasonal flowers and thoughtful details create a warm, welcoming atmosphere that encourages guests to linger.

For our table, we chose:

  • Yellow and orange chrysanthemums
  • Delicate baby's breath
  • Crisp Ivory linens
  • Champagne flutes
  • Small plates with coordinating napkins and cutlery
  • Plenty of good company

Simple touches create an inviting table where the food becomes part of the décor.

The Menu

Designed for leisurely conversation and effortless entertaining, this menu can be prepared almost entirely in advance, allowing you to relax and enjoy the celebration alongside your guests.

Welcome your guests with a charming first course served in vintage teacups.

Set each place setting in advance, nestling the teacup and saucer atop the salad plate for an elegant presentation. Once everyone is seated, bring a beautiful pitcher of chilled garden gazpacho to the table along with a small bowl of colorful garnishes - diced cucumber, watermelon, fresh herbs, microgreens, and edible flowers. Pour the gazpacho tableside, then invite each guest to personalize their cup with their favorite toppings. It's a delightful way to begin the meal and a memorable touch that encourages conversation from the very first course.

Offer an assortment of deviled eggs so guests  can sample a variety of flavors. Whether  classic Dijon, smoked salmon, bacon and chive, or truffle Parmesan, a colorful platter always disappears quickly.

Prepare a selection of delicate finger   sandwiches featuring seasonal ingredients. A  variety of fillings adds beautiful color and  gives everyone a favorite to enjoy.

  • 🍓 Seasonal Fruit, Olives, and Marcona Almonds

Fresh strawberries and other seasonal fruit add vibrant color and a refreshing balance to the savory offerings. Arrange them on a simple platter or tuck them around the serving pieces for an effortless presentation. Small bowls of Olives and Almonds accenting the table.

The centerpiece of the table is, of course, the Derby Day Cheese Hat. Crafted from stacked Brie wheels, wrapped with fresh chives, and decorated with seasonal flowers and grapes, it becomes both an elegant centerpiece and a delicious addition to the charcuterie board.

Place an assortment of artisan crackers nearby so guests can enjoy this piece of art.

Finish the lunch with silky lemon posset served in delicate glass coupes and topped with fresh berries, a twist of lemon zest, and a sprig of mint. It's a light, refreshing dessert that can be prepared the day before, making it perfect for entertaining.

Gather Around the Table

With a table dressed in fresh flowers, a whimsical cheese hat to spark conversation, and a menu prepared ahead of time, you'll have everything you need to slow down, celebrate the season, and enjoy the company of family and friends.

🌿 After all, Derby Day - whether you're celebrating on the East Coast or the West Coast - isn't just about the race. It's about gathering around the table, savoring the season, and creating memories with the people you love.
